Irma Mae Heard, 82, of Sedalia, passed away, Monday, February 7, 2011, at Tipton Oak Manor, Tipton, MO.  She was born on May 2, 1928, in Vardaman, MS, a daughter of John Wesley and Ellen McFalls Long.

On February 10, 1946, in Greenwood, MS, she was united in marriage to Joseph Heard, who preceded her in death in1997. Irma was a devoted wife to Joe for 51 years.

She moved from Mississippi to Missouri with her daughter, Wesley and lived here for 10 years until she met her savior face to face. She loved her family, enjoyed cooking, shopping for antiques and painting. She loved preparing for her grandchildren and looked forward to them coming home to visit her. She was a member of the Broadmeadow Methodist Church in Jackson, MS.

She is survived by two daughters, JoEllen Gillmar and her husband Terry of Spicewood, TX and Wesley Brown and her husband Eddie of Sedalia; a son, Dan Heard and his wife Patty of Flowood, MS; a brother, Robert Long and his wife Martha of Jackson, MS; a son-in-law, Gaylon Regan and his wife Kathleen of Brandon, MS; seven grandchildren, Dylan, Jasper, Maggie, Nathaniel, Anna, Caleb and Weston; and five great grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Zeldaree Wilson, Connie Fultz and Mildred Weber; four brothers, Van, Weston, Ted and Johnnie Long.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, February, 21, 2011, at Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson, MS, with  Rev. Eddie Brown officiating. 

Honorary pallbearers will be Dylan Regan, Jasper Gillmar, Nathaniel Brown, Caleb Brown and Weston Heard Ostrander.

Thomas "Tom" Dean Hockaday, Sr., 70, of Sedalia, passed away, Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at Four Seasons Living Center, Sedalia. He was born on August 1,1940, in Smithton, MO, a son of Thomas William Augustus and Edith (Young) Hockaday.

Tom lived most of his life in Sedalia. He played in several bands, Country-Western, Pop, Rock, and loved playing the guitar. He worked for Lake City Arsinal for several years and drove for The Yellow Cab Company in Sedalia. He was a Christian, attending several different churches here in Sedalia and regularly attending worship service at Four Seasons.

He is survived by three daughters, Cindy Sanchez of Wyoming, Kim Tubbs and Shannon Hockaday, both of Sedalia; one son, Thomas Hockaday, Jr of Sedalia; two sisters, Shirley Laramie and Mary Tucker both of Sedalia, one brother, John Hockaday and his wife Pam of Sedalia, six grandchildren; four great grandchildren and Hank Laramie his coffee buddy.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Donna Richardson and Katy Milledge; three brothers,William "Billy",Gregory Kent, and James Henry Hockaday.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia. Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Otterville.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00pm, Friday, February 4th, at the funeral chapel.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Bothwell Hospice or Four Seasons Living Center in care of the funeral chapel.

Pallbearers will be Cory Smith, David Hockaday, Gary Hockaday, Jim Steele, Walter Tubbs, and Tom Plantz.

Robert W. Freund, 70, of Kansas City, formerly of Sedalia, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011, at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia. He was born on August 29, 1940, in Sedalia, a son of Lynn and Louise Alcorn Freund.

 

Bob was a 1958 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961. After the Navy, he went on to further his education at the University of Missouri where he received his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1968. In 1969 he went to work as an Electrical Engineer for Allied Signal/Honeywell, in Kansas City, retiring in 2005.

 

Bob was very artistic. He enjoyed woodcarving, oil painting, drawing and photography. He was a nature lover and enjoyed traveling, loved small animals and was known to adopt a few.  He was a good neighbor and was always willing to help his fellow man. Bob will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.

 

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Freund of Sedalia, several cousins, including a special cousin who was more like a little sister, Debbie Foster, of Sedalia.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011, at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia, with Rev. Ed Broyles officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service.

 

Friends may call after 8:30 a.m., Thursday at the funeral chapel.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the Sedalia Area Literacy Council, Lincoln Community Care Center Guild, or Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter, Kansas City, MO all in care of Rea Funeral Chapel.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be David Althoff, Charles Andrews, Paul Moseman, Craig Russell, Kent Thoeni, and Hardy Washington.

Benny Lee Bell, 73, of Sedalia, passed away, Saturday, January 29, 2011, at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia.  He was born on January 1, 1938, in Searcy Arkansas, a son of Crawford and Bobby Janette Williams Bell.

He graduated from Searcy High School in 1955 and Arkansas State College in Conway, AR in 1962. He taught math at Smithton High School in Smithton, Mo for three years. He worked for the Neighborhood Youth Corp for two years. In 1967, he took a teaching position at Boonville Youth Training School in Boonville, Mo. He then transferred to Missouri Hills School-Fort Bellefontaine Campus in St. Louis, MO, where he was administration/psychological examiner until retirement in 1999. He served his country honorably in the US Army, The National Guard and the Reserves. He was a member of the Sedalia Elks Lodge 125 and The American Legion Post #442 of St. Louis.  He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed listening to Fox News and talk radio. He was a retired teacher and a history buff.  He loved his family and being at the farm in Arkansas.

 

He is survived by three daughters, Amy Dunkin and her husband Wes and their children: Alicia and Alix Dunkin, Jennie Rodewald and her husband Chris and their children: Sarah, Joseph and Hannah Rodewald, Lorrie Birdsong and her children: Blair Birdsong-Johnson, and Jackie and Haley Lee Birdsong; one son, Jeff Birdsong and his wife Mary Ann and their children: Lindsay, Laura and Landon Birdsong all of Sedalia; two sisters and one brother of Arkansas.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, February 3, 2011, at The Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery.

Friends may pay their respects,Wednesday, February 2, 2011 from 9:00am - 5:00pm, at Rea Funeral Chapel in Sedalia.

Pallbearers will be Wes Dunkin, Chris Rodewald, John Cornell, William Brady, John Brady, and Danny Bell.

Robert Ervin Houts, 82, of Sedalia, passed away, Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia. He was born on July 7, 1928, in Clinton, Mo, a son of Harlow and Seleta Hellahan Houts.

 

His passion was photography and received his master of photography degree from The Professional Photographers of America. He was active in the Missouri Photography Association and also a member of the Greater Kansas City Photo Association. He served his country honorably in the US Navy, serving time in the Korean War. He had his pilots license and enjoyed flying, bass fishing, making fishing lures, and loved music of all kinds.  He loved eating at Golden Corral, Wendy's and Long John Silvers.

 

He is survived by close friends, Gerald and Ruth Schlomer of Sedalia.

 

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Victor A. Houts and his sister, Nathalee Kathleen Eberting.

 

A Celebration of Life and gathering of friends will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 pm, January, 30, 2011, at Rea Funeral Chapel, Sedalia.
