Allen Lee Hawkins Jr., 96, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at his home.
He was born on April 14, 1930, in Coffeyville, Kansas, the son of Allen Lee Hawkins Sr. and Marguerite (Roberts) Hawkins, who preceded him in death.
Allen spent his early childhood in various communities throughout Kansas and Missouri before his family settled in Sedalia when he was 15 years old. He attended Smith-Cotton High School and later earned his GED, continuing his education through several institutions of higher learning.
On August 5, 1951, in Sedalia, he was united in marriage to Shirley Anne (Brownfield) Hawkins, who preceded him in death on January 1, 2005.
Allen proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1948 until 1952, attaining the rank of sergeant. During the Korean War, he served with the 1st Marine Division, participating in several major military operations, including the historic Inchon landing and the fighting surrounding Seoul. During his service, he was held as a prisoner of war for eleven days and was wounded while assisting fellow Marines on the battlefield. Among his military honors were the Purple Heart, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, and several other decorations recognizing his courageous service.
Following his military discharge, Allen returned to Sedalia, where he began a 38-year career with Heynen Monument Company, specializing in monument engraving and design. Among his meaningful contributions was engraving the names of fallen veterans on the war memorial at the Pettis County Courthouse, helping preserve their memory for future generations.
Allen dedicated much of his life to serving the Sedalia community. He was actively involved in the Sedalia Jaycees, serving in numerous leadership positions, including local president and national director. He was named Jaycee of the Year in 1959 and was later recognized as an International Jaycee Senator. Through the Jaycees, he supported countless youth programs, charitable activities, and community improvement projects.
He was also a devoted supporter of veterans' organizations, serving as commander of American Legion Post 16 and as chaplain for American Legion Post 642 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591. His commitment to helping others extended to the Salvation Army, where he served as chairman of the local board, and to the early efforts to establish State Fair Community College.
Allen's dedication to public service led him to the Sedalia City Council in 1974. On August 16, 1976, he was sworn in as Sedalia's 50th mayor, serving two terms through 1982. During his administration, Sedalia experienced significant industrial and economic growth, with five major industries locating in the community and creating approximately 3,000 jobs. He was instrumental in establishing the city's economic development program and industrial park while supporting improvements to public safety, parks, streets, and community facilities. He also helped lead the city's response to the devastating tornadoes of 1977 and 1980.
Throughout his years of public service, Allen believed in working together for the betterment of the community. His leadership, generosity, and dedication to Sedalia earned him the respect and appreciation of many. In 2016, he was honored with the Golden Knight Award from the Jaycees in recognition of his lifelong contributions.
In 2026, Allen received a special military recognition during the Military Flag Retreat ceremony at the Missouri State Fair, where he was honored by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Missouri.
Allen was a longtime member of Calvary Episcopal Church, and his life reflected a deep commitment to his faith, family, country, and community. Whether serving his fellow Marines, helping veterans and their families, or working to improve his hometown, Allen leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service that will be remembered for generations.
