Obituary For Hillory Arlen Joy

Hillory Arlen Joy, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Boone Hospital. He was born to Charles H Joy and Pauline Georgia Howard on September 11, 1931, in Urich, MO.

Hillory graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1949. He continued his education at the University of Missouri until 1950, when he enlisted into the U.S. Navy as a 2nd Class Aviation Boatmate on the Franklin D. Roosevelt in Norfolk, VA. In 1951, he came together in the marriage union with Juanita Ann Means in Norfolk, VA. Having three children, they were married for 61 years until the passing of Juanita in 2012. In 1955, Hillory went to work at Sedalia Implement CO., founded by his father, Charles, and Uncle Paul Root. In 1960, he bought out his uncle, and in 1968, he bought out his father, becoming full owner of the business. When his children were old enough, he enjoyed having them work alongside him at the business until he retired in 1985. During the time that he owned the Sedalia Implement, he was also co-owner of Walnut Hills Country Club from 1970 until 1977, when they sold the Country Club to The Sedalia Country Club. Upon retiring, he entered a new life stage with his love of golf. Playing many golf courses all over the United States, he was invited to play in Pro/Am tournaments in Las Vegas and Palm Springs, playing with exciting people like Phil Micklson, Jo Pesche, and Bill Murrey. Hillory made many hole in ones. But one particular accomplishment was one day at the Sedalia Country Club, he made two hole in ones in one 18 hole round. He still holds the record at the Country Club. He even made it into several big-city newspapers.

Hillory was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Juanita, and his sister, Bobby Fairfax.

Hillory is survived by his long-time companion, Linda Smith; two sons, John (Susanna) Joy, and Mike (Debbie) Joy, one daughter, Julie (Dennis) Sieving; one sister, Suanne (Larry) Reed; nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

An entombment will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors by the United States Navy and Sedalia VFW Post #2591.
