Irene Marie (Thompson) Sherman, 81, of Sedalia, MO, went to be home with her Lord and Savior at 6:58 p.m., Monday, December 11, 2023, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center in Sedalia. Missouri. She was born on January 13, 1942, in Friend, NE, the daughter of Russell Arlo Thompson and Agnes Marie (Epler) Thompson, who preceded her in death.
On August 11, 1967, at Berean Church in Lincoln, NE, she was united in marriage to Glenn Robert Sherman, who resides in the home. They were married for 56 years, 4 months.
Irene grew up in Friend, Nebraska, where her dad owned and operated the Friend Ice & Cold Storage business. She graduated from High School in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1960. Irene worked at Back to the Bible in Lincoln, Nebraska, before getting married. She attended college at Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Saskatchewan, Canada. While living in Kirksville, Missouri, Irene was the President of the local chapter of the Christian Business and Professional Women's Council (Christian BPW). Irene later received her Associate's in Applied Science (AAS) from State Fair Community College. She worked as a Certified Nurse's Aide at Four Seasons Living Center in Sedalia. She also worked at the Sedalia Typewriter & Computer Company. Irene was a 50-year member of Maplewood Church. Irene loved to read and played the piano. She suffered for many years with rheumatoid arthritis.
In addition to her husband, Irene is survived by three sons, Nathan Sherman, Joel Sherman, and wife Michelle; and Philip J. Sherman, all of Sedalia; five grandchildren, Keith, David, and wife Morgan; James Anthony and wife Brandy; Micaiah, and Taliyah; and three great-grandchildren Wyatt, Kenzlee, and Macy.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and David Thompson, and a sister, Vera Mae Steely.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Maplewood Church, with Rev. Dr. Eddie Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The burial will be held by the family at a later date at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO.
Memorial contributions may be made to Maplewood Church Building Fund in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
