John Michael Chancellor, 63, of Sedalia, MO, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, MO. He was born on October 16, 1960, in Sedalia, the son of Melvin Chancellor and Ruby Geraldine (Schumaker) Chancellor (Ellis), who preceded him in death. When John was four years old, his mom, Ruby, married Howard Ellis, who raised him as his own son.
John was skilled with his hands and used those skills while working as a Maintenance/Mechanic at several factories in Sedalia, including Waterloo, Alcolac, Gardner Denver, and Tyson Foods. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, archery, and camping. Every year, he would join Carlotta's family at Pomme De Terre Lake for their summer camping trips, taking his canoe out and teaching Carlotta's grandchildren how to cut wood and start a campfire. John was also a thrill seeker who loved riding his dirt bikes and motorcycles with his friends. He was a dedicated Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR. John was a passionate cook, known for cooking large amounts of food even when he was just cooking for himself and his sons. He was a master on the barbecue grill and smoker, spending entire Saturdays smoking ribs, pork butts, and pork steaks. He had his own special seasoning called "BBQ sand" that he used in all of his recipes, especially his baked beans and barbecue sauce.
John loved his kids, Kevin and Scott, and took pride in attending their sporting events, from t-ball to their high school football games. He passed on his love of the outdoors to them, and more importantly, instilled in them values of respect, modesty, humility, care, and love. He was incredibly proud of the men they have become.
Survivors include his companion, Carlotta Knight, of the home; two sons, Kevin Chancellor of Laramie, WY, and Scott Chancellor of Overland Park, KS; a brother, Jim Chancellor (Jane) of Sedalia; a sister, Darlene Meyer (Rick) of Sedalia; three half brothers, Tom Chancellor of Mulvane, KS, Bill Chancellor of Wichita, KS, and Dan Chancellor of Overland Park, KS; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
