Obituary

Mary Virginia Hockaday, 65, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2026, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia. She was born August 28, 1960, in Fort Riley, Kansas, the daughter of Levi Cook Jr. and Mary Frances (French) Cook, who both preceded her in death.

On May 3, 2023, in Sedalia, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Thomas Hockaday, who survives of the home.

Mary found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved playing Yahtzee, Rummy, and Bingo, and could often be found enjoying Candy Crush on her tablet. She especially loved being outdoors during the warmer months and treasured watching her grandchildren play in the yard. More than anything, Mary loved her family. She cherished every opportunity to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and special occasions with those she loved most.

Christmas was her favorite time of year. She delighted in decorating, giving gifts, and making the season special for her beloved family and grandchildren. Mary had a generous heart and always found more joy in giving than receiving. Her family meant everything to her, and the love she shared with them will be remembered always.

In addition to her husband, Tom, Mary is survived by two children, Robert Cook (Samantha), of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Sheila Chastain (Kevin), of Sedalia; eighteen grandchildren, Timothy, Shawna, Bobby, Heather, Adam, Adrian, Jax, Brendon, Troy, Montana, Parker, Ryder, Riley, Bella, Falicity, Sequoia, Jeremiah, and Autumn; four great-grandchildren; two nephews; and many other extended family members.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by a son, James Cook; and a brother, Kenneth Cook.

A celebration of life gathering with family and friends will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, location to be determined.
