Nancy Ellen Kirby

Nancy Ellen Kirby, 92, of Sedalia, MO, passed away in her home on Monday, April 25, 2022. Nancy was born on January 13, 1930 in Independence, MO to Wallace Bruce Pryor and Ruth Agnes Pryor.

Nancy was married to David Francis Kirby in 1949 in Boonville, MO.

Nancy had a distinguished career as a Registered Nurse. She was in the first graduating class of the Nursing Program from State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO. She finished her education at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO where she received the second highest marks in the entire state. She went on to run the first Intensive Care Unit at Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia, MO, served as Charge Nurse at 2 South at Bothwell Hospital, served as Charge Nurse of the 55 Unit Ward at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston, TX, and worked with two Surgical Doctors in Houston, TX as an Office Nurse and Secretary.

Nancy was always curious and had a thirst for knowledge. She was a lover of books, music, antiques, politics, and friends. She spent several years involved with a book club she invited into her home. When she was feeling feisty, she spent time writing letters to the newspaper regarding her thoughts on politics. She was progressive for her time and a champion of human rights. When she wasn’t sharing her opinions, she spent time planting in her garden, listening to Willie Nelson and Pink Floyd, going on 6-mile walks, frequenting antique shops and auctions, cooking for her family, and loving on her cats.

Nancy is survived by her son, Paul A. Kirby; adopted grandson, Eric Poindexter; and granddaughter, Kathryn G. Kirby.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Pryor, husband, David F. Kirby, and son, Steve Kirby.

A private graveside service will be held at an upcoming date with close family and friends. Memorial contributions may be directed to UNICEF, in Memory of Nancy Ellen Kirby, in care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
