Obituary

Peter J. Filis Jr., 60, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2026, at his home in Sedalia. He was born on September 12, 1965, in Queens, New York, the son of Peter John Filis Sr. and Josephine (Lorenzo) Filis, both of whom preceded him in death.

On January 14, 1984, in New Port Richey, Florida, Peter was united in marriage to Celeste Cooper. Together, they shared more than 42 years of marriage, and she survives in the home.

Peter was a proud graduate of Hudson High School in Hudson, Florida, Class of 1983. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. Peter devoted nearly 38 years to military service, serving from September 1983 until his retirement in March 2021. During his distinguished career, he served on combat deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. His many years of dedicated service reflected his deep sense of duty, commitment, and love of country.

Away from his military career, Peter was an avid Florida Gators fan and a devoted Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, but above all, Peter treasured the time he shared with his family. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved, especially his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Celeste, Peter is survived by his daughter, Danielle Young and her husband, Aaron, and his son, Kaleb Filis and his wife, Brook, all of Warrensburg, Missouri; four grandchildren, Braylon, Olivia, Elliot, and Landry; a sister, Linda Belmonte of Patchogue, New York; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Peter was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Filis and Tom Filis.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with Pastor Roger Austin officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Whiteman Air Force Base Honor Guard and the VFW Post #2591 in recognition of Peter's many years of honorable and dedicated service to his country.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or the Tim Tebow Foundation, in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
