Thomas Richard Burlingame, age 73, of Sedalia, Missouri, was born on August 24, 1952, and passed away on January 11, 2026.
Richard, most affectionately known as "Burley" by all who knew and loved him, will be remembered most for his kind and generous spirit, along with his absolute love and passion for sports. Burley was never afraid to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor, if you needed a tool, he probably had it, or he knew someone who did. He had a smile that could light up a room and a laugh so deep and boisterous it was contagious.
His zest for competition was evident in the way he watched and celebrated all sports. While his favorites included the Alabama Crimson Tide, MU, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Kansas City Chiefs, his loyalty was never limited to a single sport or franchise. It was common for him to place small wagers among friends just to keep things entertaining. However, his love extended far beyond the playing field, as he truly cherished gathering with friends to watch and celebrate just about anything together.
Richard is survived by his wife, Susan, the love of his life, with whom he was blessed to share over 50 years. He is also survived by three children, Thomas Richard Burlingame, Jr., Douglas Christopher Burlingame, and Kristi Karol Wallace, all of Sedalia; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four of his five siblings; and many nieces and nephews. He is further survived by an abundance of friends whom he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Thomas Burlingame and Edna Louis (Romig) Burlingame, and one brother.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Rea Funeral Chapel, followed by a private graveside service at Highland Sacred Gardens. There will be no formal funeral service.
Pallbearers will include Steven Davis, Patrick Moon, Terry Randolph, Jason Moore, David Loveland, and John Moon. Honorary pallbearer will be Joe Andrews and Greg Allain.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are in the care of Rea Funeral Chapel.
